A workshop/seminar can last for anything from 30 min to about 1 hour and 30 min, and during the seminar we will explain and demonstrate how to create, program, and use home made electronic instruments. The workshop/seminar typically begins with a walk through all the equipment that Captain Credible utilizes on stage, explaining what each unit does, how it was made, where to get cheap parts to make something like it, and alternative solutions to solve the relevant problems. This introduction covers everything from midi controllers that control the computer to the homebrew software being controlled by said controllers... and even drumming robots and rhythmical control of lights. Throughout the introduction, examples will be demonstrated and the audience is invited to participate and interact so that they can experience for themselves how it all works.

If time allows, a quick course in creating your own software synth or effect processor can be included, from  concept to programming and final integration in a live performance environment. Another thing I like to do if time allows it is to build a small device with the audience  that we can use to control our brand new synth/effect processor, demonstrating how anything from light sensors and body contact to knobs and switches can controll our software. At a larger workshop/seminar the audience can be split into groups who each build their own effect/synth and controller. Thereafter we can all play some music together with our creations.

At this point in the workshop/seminar we leave the digital realm and enter the analogue world. Instead of controlling software with sensors and microcontrollers, we will make a "synth" that generates sound all by itself.

The audience will be split into groups and each group given an experiment board together with the necessary components to build a simple oscillator. Then there will be a brief introduction to each component we will be using along with a very basic introduction to electronics. Together we will then build our oscillators, working step by step and explaining what is happening at each step. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes. When we have them all working it's time to experiment with the circuits we've created.

This, in likeness to the idea behind the whole seminar/workshop, is to show the audience that electronics aren't necessarily so complicated and inaccessible as they may seem. Once we've learned enough to scrape at the surface, and to avoid dangers like hazardous electrocutions and huge explosions, we can experiment and google our way to the most fantastic inventions.

Seminar Med Captain Credible.
